Kael moved through the shell of the old city with his head down and his boots muffled in
anti-resonant foam. The ruins of what had once been called “Los Angeles” now lay
beneath layers of dust and moss, its glass towers long reduced to steel bones. The only
sound was the wind—thin, high, and permitted only because it could not be stopped.
